ONEONTA, NY – The Utica University softball team battled back and secured a 6-5 victory over Hartwick on Tuesday afternoon, using a late offensive push and a go-ahead home run to complete the comeback in a contest that was restarted after being abandoned due to rain earlier in the season.
Utica finished with 10 hits on the day, led by Eden Resch (Stillwater, NY/Stillwater), who went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs, including the game-winning blast in the seventh. Alexa Thompson (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) added a pair of hits and an RBI, while Mya Strong (Hudson Falls, NY/Hudson Falls) delivered a key two-run triple. Madeline Waddell (Riverside, CA/Riverside Polytechnic) also drove in a run, and Kadyn Hartel (West Henrietta, NY/Rush Henrietta) chipped in with two hits as the Pioneers produced throughout the lineup.
In the circle, Kari Graziano (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane) earned the win after tossing 5.1 innings, allowing five runs while striking out three. Maggie Habernig (Kingston, NY/Kingston) closed the door with 1.2 scoreless innings in relief to secure the victory.
Prior to the suspension of the contest back on March 31, Hartwick struck first with a three-run opening inning, capitalizing on an error and timely hitting to take an early 3-0 lead. Utica answered in the third, cutting the deficit to one behind RBI hits from Waddell and Resch. The remainder of the contest would be suspended due to rain.
In this evening's continuation, the game remained tight into the sixth when the Pioneers broke through. After a pair of baserunners reached, Strong laced a two-run triple down the line to give Utica its first lead at 4-3. Thompson followed with an RBI single to extend the advantage to 5-3.
Hartwick responded in the bottom half, taking advantage of walks and an error to tie the game at 5-5, setting the stage for late-game heroics.
In the top of the seventh, Resch delivered the decisive swing, launching a solo home run to left to put Utica back in front. The Pioneers' defense held in the final frame, stranding the tying run on base to seal the 6-5 win.
Utica (15-15, 10-6 Empire 8) returns to action on Friday, April 24 as the team hosts Nazareth University. First pitch of game one is set for 3pm from Greenman Field.
