UTICA, N.Y. – Utica University cross country/track and field coach Sam Catterson will be recognized with the prestigious Section III Service Award, honoring his distinguished contributions to Section III athletics, supporting student-athletes, and the local athletic community. The Section III Service Award recognizes individuals who demonstrate selfless service and contribute to a lasting impact on collegiate athletics. Catterson's passion for the sport, dedication to supporting young athletes, and longstanding contributions to the running community make him a deserving recipient of this honor. Utica University proudly congratulates Catterson on this well-earned recognition and acknowledges his continued service to the institution and the region's athletic community. Catterson will be officially receiving this honor at the Section III Athletic Directors' meeting on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. 

Catterson was named head coach of the cross country program in 2019, a promotion that has led to incredible academic and athletic success. In his first season, Catterson led the program to Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year honors. The program has seen numerous Empire 8 All-Conference honors, including five in the 2025 season. Catterson also coached Bennett Melita (Johnstown, NY/Fonda-Fultonville) to an Individual Empire 8 Conference Championship in 2025, with Melita, a junior at the time, also appearing in the NCAA Division III National Championship Qualifier for the second straight year, a historic accomplishment for the program. As the assistant track & field coach, Catterson helped the team secure six NCAA Division III National Championship qualifiers during this past season.

Pioneer cross country kicks off its 2026 season at the SUNY Poly Short Course Invitational, held on the campus of SUNY Poly. The meet is scheduled to start at 10 am, September 5th.
