FREDONIA, NY – The Utica women's soccer team fell to the Fredonia Blue Devils, 1-0, in a tightly contested match on Friday. The hosts struck early, finding the breakthrough within the opening 15 minutes. The Pioneers spent the second half pushing for an equalizer, increasing their attacking pressure but ultimately coming up short. Despite a relentless effort after halftime, Fredonia held on for the victory in the opening match of the Blue Devil Classic.
The early stages of the match featured end-to-end action, with both teams battling for possession. Fredonia forward Anna Ratchuk opened the scoring in the 15th minute with an impressive strike into the top corner to give the Blue Devils the lead. The remainder of the first half was reminiscent of the Pioneers' trip to Potsdam, as several attacking opportunities went unrewarded. Goalkeeper Emily Duro (Wappinger Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) kept Utica within striking distance, making six crucial saves in the opening 45 minutes to prevent Fredonia from extending its advantage.
Utica opened the second half with a chance from defender Cora Kraft (Poughquag, NY/Arlington), but the Fredonia goalkeeper was equal to the task. The Pioneers continued to create opportunities over the next 10 to 15 minutes, with shots from Madison Wagner (Saukville, WI/Divine Savior Holy Angels) and Ella Dischiavo (Utica, NY/Sauquoit Valley) also turned away. Utica's final attempt on target came with 10 minutes remaining, when Adrianna Calabria's (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) well-struck effort was saved.
In the end, Fredonia goalkeeper Carissa Shanahan recorded a seven-save shutout to preserve the Blue Devils' 1-0 victory. While the result was a frustrating one for the Pioneers, the team delivered a strong overall performance. A disciplined defensive effort helped create second-half opportunities and allowed Utica to push forward in search of the equalizer.
The Pioneers move to 1-2-1 overall (0-0 Empire 8) and will return to action on Saturday, September 12, against Oswego State in the final match of the Blue Devil Clarion Classic. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
