Utica, NY - Utica women's soccer opened conference play at home against a formidable SUNY Geneseo side on Saturday afternoon. A tense matchup saw the visitors pile on pressure for much of the game, dominating possession. A first-half solo effort gave Utica the lead against the run of play heading into the halftime break. The Knights fired back to level the score after an unlucky goal late in the second half to earn a point at Casamento Field.
The Knights dominated the opening sequence of play, passing the ball around the Utica midfield and creating a barrage of chances. The Utica defense kept out every effort, continuing its dominant showing this season. With halftime looming, junior transfer Abigail Jalocha (Maspeth, NY/Monsignior McClancy Memorial) broke the deadlock with an unbelievable solo effort, dribbling past the Geneseo defense and slotting the ball into the top-right corner. Jalocha continues her run of scoring beautiful solo goals, reminiscent of her effort last time out against Morrisville. The Pioneers went into the break on top through 45 minutes.
To start the second half, Utica locked down the final third, forcing the visitors into low-risk opportunities. With time starting to become an issue for Geneseo, the Knights found themselves level through an unfortunate goal from outside the box. With the match tied, the visitors pushed for a winner and came dangerously close with eight minutes left to play, as a shot smashed off the crossbar.
The Pioneers opened conference play with a point, feeling unlucky not to take all three after another strong defensive performance. As the heart of the season approaches, the 2026 Pioneers seem to have established a defensive identity, giving opposing teams an immense challenge in creating goalscoring opportunities
The Pioneers improved to 3-2-2 overall (0-0-1 Empire 8) and will return to action on Wednesday, September 23, with an away against Hartwick College in a conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 6:00 PM
