Potsdam, NY - The Utica University women's soccer team traveled to SUNY Potsdam on Friday afternoon for the Bears' home opener, battling to a scoreless draw in a hard-fought non-conference matchup.
The Pioneers controlled much of the play in the opening half, generating several scoring opportunities and applying heavy pressure in the attacking third. Potsdam goalkeeper Caroline Vines helped keep the match scoreless, making key saves throughout the period. The Bears recorded their lone shot on goal for the game in the sixth minute, but Utica goalkeeper Emily Duro (Wappinger Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) was there for the save.
Potsdam increased its attacking pressure after halftime and looked for a breakthrough goal, but the Pioneer defense stood firm. Utica's back line continued its strong start to the season, limiting any real chances and preserving the shutout. One of the best opportunities of the match came in the 65th minute, when Mykah Collier-Fisher (Lake George, NY/Lake George) nearly converted off a corner kick. Vines made a crucial stop to keep the ball from crossing the line and maintain the scoreless deadlock.
The Pioneers will find themselves unlucky to leave Potsdam with a point, after dominating the Bears in their first away game of the season. Utica registered 15 shots on target, forcing seven saves from goalkeeper Caroline Vines, who seemed determined to keep a clean sheet. Another positive defensive display from the Pioneers will make Head Coach Brooke Barbuto proud, as the backbone of her squad proves to be indestructible at times.
The Pioneers move to 0-1-1 overall (0-0 Empire 8) and return to action on Saturday, September 5, when they host SUNY Canton at Laura M. Casamento Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM
