Ben Atwood was named an assistant coach for the Utica College football program in the Summer of 2009. His responsibilities include assisting with all facets of the kicking game and special teams. He is also responsible for out of state recruiting.
Atwood was a punter for the UC football program from 2005-2008 and during his time as a Pioneer he solidified himself as the most successful punter in program-history. He was a two-time member of the ECAC Northwest First Team and he was the program’s only three-time Empire 8 All-Conference First Team selection. After an impressive senior campaign he was named a D3football.com All-East Region Second Team selection.
As of 2013, Atwood holds every Utica College punting record, including yards (6,018), attempts (155), yards per attempt (38.83) and longest punt (67). He was the program’s Special Teams Player of the Year for four consecutive seasons and he was ranked in the top ten nationally in yards per punt in his senior campaign. In 2008 he was named a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete and he also garnered the Utica Kiwanis Senior Student-Athlete award.
He graduated from UC in the Winter of 2009 with a degree in history. He was an active member of the College community as a freshman orientation mentor for three years. He was also inducted into the Phi Alpha Theta fraternity and he was a member of the Utica College Historical Society.
He is currently a Young Scholars program site assistant at nearby Proctor High School, where he provides academic assistance for at-risk and potentially at-risk students. He keeps extensive written and electronic records on student progress and helps to build a positive relationship between the program and the faculty. He also helps plan, implement and execute several community service projects.
Atwood spent five months as a substitute teacher in the Central New York Area and he currently has New York State certification in social studies (grades: 7-12).
He completed his masters in adolescence and special education at Utica College in the Spring of 2013. He currently resides in Waterville, N.Y. with his girlfriend Cindy.Â
