Nick Calo was hired in the Summer of 2019 as the assistant men’s soccer coach. He will assist head coach Brian Marcantonio with all facets of the program, including day-to-day operations, scouting, recruiting, as well as game and practice preparation.
Calo brings a level of familiarity with Central New York, and the Empire 8 Conference to the position. The native of nearby Syracuse played two years at Empire 8 rival St. John Fisher College while earning his degree in Sport Management, and he later coached for two seasons with the Cardinals.
The latest addition to the Pioneers’ staff comes to Utica after serving in a prominent capacity with one of the nation’s top clubs. From August 2016 until July 2019, he was the assistant director of coaching for Orlando City Youth Soccer. Orlando City Youth Soccer is the player developmental academy system created and operated by Orlando City SC of Major League Soccer. He worked with age groups ranging from under-8 to under-19 in the Orlando Area to prepare players for high school, college, club, and professional opportunities in soccer.
His time in the Sunshine State also afforded him the chance to assist in the Division I ranks. He spent the 2016 season as an assistant coach at Stetson University. Calo coached three All-Atlantic Sun honorees with the Hatters.
In 2017, he was an assistant coach with Seminole High School. His leadership guided the team to a Florida state semifinal appearance while they also captured regional and district championships.
During his time at Fisher, he coached five all-conference players in two seasons. As a player, he did not miss a game for the Cardinals during the 2011 and 2012 seasons and totaled a goal and three assists from the midfield during his time with the Fisher eleven. He made thirteen total starts for the Red and Gold. Prior to Fisher, he was an NJCAA All-Region 3 honorable mention selection with Onondaga Community College during his one season with the Lazers.
Calo resides in Utica and is pursuing his masters’ degree here at Utica College.
