Utica, NY (5/6/2013) – Junior Abby Monroe of Utica College softball team was named the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for her outstanding performance on the mound this past week.  Monroe went  4-1 including a no-hitter in the 1st round of the Empire 8 tournament against Alfred.

Monroe totaled of 27+ innings during that five game stretch while tallying 17 strikeouts and a 2.40 ERA.  Her lone loss came in the Conference tournament winner takes all game Sunday against St. John Fisher.

The junior transfer set a single-season record for most wins (19) tying Bobbie McMail Simon, who is set to be inducted to the Hall of Fame on May 15th.  The lefthander also leads the rotation in strikeouts (91), innings pitched (128.0) while with a 2.24 ERA. Monroe is also in the top five in four pitching categories in the Empire 8 Conference including second in wins (19), third in innings pitched (128.0), fourth in strikeouts (90), and fifth in ERA (2.19).

The Pioneers finished its 2013 regular-season campaign with a school-record 33 wins and despite losing in the conference championship to Fisher, still earned the No. 2 seed to the NCAA Regional round.  The regional round is set for May 9-May 13 in Ithaca, NY.
