Box Score The Utica College Pioneers capitalized on a 22-carry, 152-yard, two-touchdown performance by sophomore running back Dave Hogan (Concord/Concord, MA) to thrash first-year program Husson College, 36-0, and record their first win of the season on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
Utica's shutout victory improved the Pioneers' record to 1-4 and granted the team its first win of 2003, while the Braves of Husson remained winless on the year, falling to 0-4.
The Pioneer offensive unit out-performed the Braves both on the ground and through the air all afternoon. The UC ground game netted 311 yards on 55 carries, while the team's aerial attack accounted for 112 yards on 12 completions. Husson finished the day with 60 yards rushing and 42 yards passing for only 102 yards of total offense.
Hogan kicked off the largest offensive output in UC's three-year history with a 59-yard touchdown run five minutes into regulation. Sophomore kicker Dale Boothroyd (West Genesee/Camillus) followed with an early second-quarter field goal, which marked the first successful field goal in program history, while sophomore fullback Paul Hart (Oriskany Central/Whitesboro), who took seven carries for 70 yards on the day, completed the Pioneers' first-half dominance with a 35-yard touchdown dash two-minutes prior to halftime.
The second half featured a six-yard touchdown run by Hogan, a one-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown by senior Adam Luciano (Mechanicville/Mechanicville), and a 15-yard end zone sprint by sophomore running back Chad Clark (Cambridge Central/Cambridge).
Freshman Nick Martin (Rome Free Acad/Rome) completed 10 of his 21 pass attempts for 102 yards, including a long of 19 yards.
Senior Anthony Venturino (DeSales/Geneva) led a dominant UC defensive unit that denied Husson the chance to post any points on the scoreboard with a game-high 14 tackles (eight solo), including two sacks, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one pass deflection. The Pioneer defense, which allowed the Braves into the red zone only once on the day, also received strong performances from senior lineman Bryon George (Midlakes/Geneva), who finished with nine tackles, including four for a loss of 19 yards and three sacks, and junior lineman Trevon Newton (Elmont Memorial/Elmont), who tallied eight hits, including one for a loss of 24 yards and one pass breakup.
