UC DOWNS COLBY 5-1

UTICA, NY – The Utica College women's hockey team defeated Colby 5-1 Saturday in the opening contest of the St. Michael's Tournament in Burlington, VT.

Stephanie Price (River Rouge, MI/) opened the scoring for the Pioneers just 5:14 into the first period on an assist from senior forward Deanna Wiegand (Utica, MI/). Krystal Cummings (Victor, NY/) gave UC a 2-0 first period lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the period. Wiegand also assisted on the Pioneers' second goal.

Amanda Comeau scored Colby's lone goal of the evening to cut the Pioneers lead to 2-1 early in the second period.

Just over a minute later Cummings responded with her second goal of the game on an assist from Amanda Finkle and Wiegand. Samantha Rowan (Trenton, MI/) tallied her sixth goal of the season on a power play at 9:46 in the second to give UC a commanding 4-1 lead.

Cummings, a sophomore forward, closed out the scoring and tallied her first career hat-trick as the nationally-ranked No. 8 Pioneers improved to 6-1-1 on the season.

Senior goalie Stephanie Yates (Garden Grove, CA/) made 15 stops in net for the Pioneers, earning her second win of the season.
