REBECCA CORSONES

FIELD HOCKEY DEFEATS NAZARETH

Freshman Rebecca Corsones' (Kingston/Hurley) first collegiate goal will be a memorable one as she guided the Utica College women's field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Empire 8 Conference rival Nazareth College Saturday. Corsones netted her first goal of the season, unassisted, at the 43:16 mark of the second half and senior goalie Amanda McDonnell (Portsmouth Abby/Sagamore Beach, MA) stopped a game-high 13 shots as the Pioneers improved to 3-0 in conference play after defeating conference foes Elmira, Washington & Jefferson and Nazareth in consecutive games.

UC has now won five-of-seven contests and improved its overall record to 5-5. The Pioneers sit atop the Empire 8 Conference and are in prime position to earn a berth into the conferment tournament, an outstanding feat considering they were picked to finish sixth in the conference pre-season coaches poll. Nazareth dropped below .500 with the loss and is now 4-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Nazareth out shot Utica 16-15 on the day and earned a 10-7 penalty corner advantage. Nazareth goalkeeper Kelsey Evans stopped 11 shots in 70:00 of work.

Corsones tallied a team-high four shots on the day and eight other Pioneers tallied one shot on net. Three different Golden Flyer's registered at least two shots on goal including Sara Heron (four), Emily Conway (three) and Kelly Flanagan (two).

UC returns to action Wednesday when they host Geneseo State for a non-conference contest on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The contest is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
