WOMEN'S TENNIS SUFFERS TWO LOSSES OVER WEEKEND

The Utica College women's tennis team was swept by Alfred University on Saturday and Nazareth College on Sunday during Empire 8 Conference action.

    Senior Juanita Fuentes (T.R. Proctor/Utica) lost both matches at first singles while junior Nichole Rodriguez (Jamestown/Jamestown) managed to steal four games against Alfred before surrendering to defeat.  Utica's Mercy Tomy (T.R. Proctor/Utica) brought her Alfred opponent into a first set tie-break but went home with the loss at third singles.  She was also defeated on Sunday at Nazareth.

    The Pioneers were outscored by their opponents 250-25 throughout the weekend. With the two losses, Utica falls to 0-7 on the season while Alfred improves to 9-5 and Nazareth now stands at 6-4.

    The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 8 when they host Elmira College. The 4 p.m. conference match will be the last of the regular season for both teams.
