The Utica College women's field hockey team lost to visiting and nationally-ranked No. 16 Skidmore College 3-0 Saturday in non conference action on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
The loss brings the Pioneers' 2008 campaign to a close and they finished with a 7-10 overall record. UC says goodbye to seniors
Amanda McDonnell (Portsmouth Abbey/Sagamore Beach, MA) and
Katie Kutas (New York Mills/New York Mills). Kutas closes out her four year career ranked second on the College's all-time goal scoring list, just one goal shy of tying the College record for goals in a career. The former Empire 8 Player of the Year finished with 45 career goals, one shy of former All-American and Pioneer Hall of Fame inductee
Shannon Rohacek (Little Falls/Little Falls). McDonnell has etched her name into the record books by breaking the College's all-time saves record. In four seasons with the Pioneers she has tallied 372 saves, good for first all-time.
Skidmore closes out its regular season with a 13-3 overall record and they will await post season play after finishing the regular season in a first place tie with St. Lawrence atop the Liberty League standings.
Sophomore
Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) opened the scoring for the Thoroughbreds when she netted her team-high 15th goal of the season to give Skidmore a 1-0 lead just 2:50 into the first half. Kemp tipped in
Carolyne McManama's (Medfield, MA/The Taft School) shot from the point off a penalty corner to give the Thoroughbreds the lead.
Freshman forward
Molly Spara (Fairport/Fairport) scored Skidmore's second goal of the contest in the 55th minute. Spara was set up perfectly by Kemp to give the Thoroughbreds a 2-0 lead. Kemp's crossing pass met Spara's stick and she rifled home her second goal of the year to the left side of the net.
Sophomore forward
Brittany O'Brien (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) added an insurance goal with 30 seconds left to play to close out the scoring on the evening.
McDonnell ended her career with ten saves for UC while sophomore goalie
Liz Catinella (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln Sudbury) stopped seven shots in her 13th win of the season for Skidmore.
Skidmore out shot UC 16-8 and also earned a 7-6 penalty corner advantage in the victory.
