The beautiful New York City skyline may have helped to keep Utica College's spirits high as the women's tennis team was swept 9-0 to the
Stevens Ducks on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Juanita Fuentes (T.R. Proctor/Utica) was able to steal three games in the first set of her first singles match but went onto fall 6-3, 6-1 to Whitney Bender. At second singles,
Nichole Rodriguez (Jamestown/Jamestown) was swept by Allyson Kingman in straight sets while
Mercy Tomy (Notre Dame/New Hartford) was beat 6-0, 6-2 by Nicole Portner at third singles. Utica's
Johanna Jennings (Windsor/Kirkwood) suffered a loss to Kendra Appleheimer 6-1, 6-0 at the fourth position and
Chornay Prowl (Pleasant Valley/Kunkletown, PA) lost 6-0, 6-1 to Steven's Mine Bese at fifth singles. Freshman
Deirdre Warren (The Gateway School/Bronx) was swept in straight sets in her collegiate debut in the six spot. On the doubles side, the Pioneers lost 8-1 in all three matches.
Stevens held Utica to only 11 game wins on the day as they took home the victory. With the loss UC falls to 0-2 on the season while Stevens improves to 3-2.
Utica returns to action on Saturday as they host the Tigers of RIT at noon. The match is part of Utica College's homecoming festivities.
