MCDONNELL STOPS 22 SHOTS IN 3-1 PIONEER LOSS

Senior captain Amanda McDonnell (Portsmouth Abby/Sagamore Beach, MA) stopped 22 shots in net but it was not enough as the Utica College women's field hockey team was out shot 24-0 in the first half and Brockport State went on to defeat the Pioneers 3-1 in non conference action Wednesday.

The Pioneers, who played for the first time on grass as opposed to their home surface of field turf, could not mount an offensive attack in the first half and found themselves down 2-0 after two first half goals by the Golden Eagles.  UC drops to 0-3 with the loss, while Brockport remained undefeated and improved to 2-0 with the victory.

Allyson Granish opened the scoring for Brockport when she knocked a rebound past McDonnell at the 11:03 mark of the first half.  Jenn Danker, who tallied a game-high ten shots on the day, was credited with an assist on the game's opening goal.  Brockport took a 2-0 lead when Danker knocked home the game-winner with just over a minute left in the first half after receiving a pass from just outside the circle from Andrea Maslowski.  The goal marked the first of the season for Danker but she was not done yet as she went on to net the third goal of the game, giving her five points on the day, as the Golden Eagles took a commanding 3-0 just 1:41 into the second half.

Freshman Mallory Mariano (Vernon Verona Sherrill/Oneida) netted her first collegiate goal to cut the Golden Eagles lead to 3-1 after receiving a pass from junior Elizabeth Knudsen (Rome/Rome) off a penalty corner at the 47:20 mark of the second half.  UC could not muster a comeback after netting their only goal of the contest and the Golden Eagles went on to a commanding 3-1 victory.

Brockport dominated the box score out shooting UC 37-9 on the day and they also controlled the penalty corner statistic earning a 14-5 advantage.

UC returns to the field Friday when they travel to Oswego State to take on the Lakers at 5 p.m.  The Pioneers defeated Oswego 5-0 in 2007.
