FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO ITHACA

UTICA, NY (10/17/09) - The Utica College women's field hockey team (7-5, 3-2 E8) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead but could not hang on as Ithaca College (4-9, 2-3 E8) scored the game's final two goals en route to a 2-1 victory in Empire 8 Conference play on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Saturday. Sophomore Rebecca Corsones (Hurley, NY) tipped in the lone goal of the contest for Utica off a penalty corner shot from Lindsey Jester (Holland Patent, NY) 17th minute. Ithaca goalie Chelsea Welsh made a diving save on a penalty stroke in the 67th minute to preserve the victory for the Bombers.

The Pioneers controlled the first half of play, out shooting the Bombers 10-2, and took a 1-0 lead into the half.

Ithaca came to play in the second half and netted two goals to earn the conference victory. Laura Murphy scored the first goal for IC off a rebound into the lower left corner of the cage at the 45:48 mark. Tracy Rivas added the game-winner in the off a rebound in the lower right corner in the 61st minute.

Sophomore goalie Monica Storms (Owego, NY) stopped two shots in her fifth loss of the season while Chelsea Welsh stopped seven shots in the victory for Ithaca.

The Pioneers have now lost two straight conference games after winning five consecutive games mid way through the season.

Utica returns to action Tuesday when they travel to RPI to take on the Engineers in a non conference contest at Harkness Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
