The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team (4-11, 3-3 E8) scored the game's final two goals, unanswered, in a 3-1 victory over Utica College (4-9, 2-4 E8) on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Saturday afternoon. Sophomore forward
Jill Benoit (Liverpool, NY) netted the lone goal of the contest for Utica, her second of the season, off an assist from classmate
Chelsea Way (Cuyler, NY) to knot the contest up at 1-1 in the 20th minute. Stevens added two goals, in the 29th and 67th minute, to snap a three game losing streak.
Stevens opened the scoring at the 5:19 mark of the first half when
Kathleen Schuckers (Lincoln Park, NJ) sent a low pass through the Pioneer defense and connected with
Gia Gonzales (Encinitas, Calif.). Gonzales received the ball in stride and drove in on a breakaway along the right side. As Pioneer keeper
Jaime Hillman (Hornell, NY) came out to contest the breakaway Gonzales ripped a low shot into the left corner of the net to give the Ducks an early 1-0 lead.
UC answered with Benoit's goal less than 15 minutes later but the Stevens offense proved to be too much as the game progressed.
Schuckers added her team-best sixth goal of the season for the Ducks at 29:39 before
Mary Chew (West Deptford, NJ) scored the only goal of the season half, her fourth of the season, to seal the victory for Stevens.
Hillman stopped a game high seven shots in the loss for Utica while her counterpart,
Kaitlin McClymont (Corpus Christi, TX), made six saves in net for Stevens.
The Ducks out shot UC 18-12 on the day and also earned a 3-1 corner kick advantage.
The Pioneers hit the road Wednesday when they travel to Ithaca, NY to take on the nationally-ranked Bombers of Ithaca College. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Stevens returns to Hoboken, NJ to take on conference foe Hartwick College on the turf at DeBaun Field. The contest will begin at 2:30 p.m.
