The men and women's swim and dive teams competed at Oneonta State Saturday afternoon with both teams suffering defeats, as the men lost 149-60 and the women lost 130-93. The Pioneers won eight events in the competition and once again had a stellar performance from junior diver
Ashley Van Patten (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) (Schenectady, NY) who won two more diving competitions and has now won ten straight events.
Van Patten's sweep of the 1-meter diving competition tallied 18 points towards the women's score. She finished with a 157.40 mark, and was followed by fellow Pioneer Ashley Rasbach (Rome, NY), who had a 96.10 mark in the event.
Adrian Romanski (Maspeth, NY/Laguardia) (Maspeth, NY) won the 1-meter dive competition on the men's side for Utica with a dive of 115.55.
Both the men and women's teams won their 100-yard breaststroke events. Utica's
Brandon Racha (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) (Holland Patent, NY) and Robert Mayton (Cooperstown, NY) finished one-two on the men's side, with times of 1:14.38 and 1:20.34, respectively. The women took the first three spots in their event, led by
Sarah Parker (Dover, NH/Dover) (Dover, NH) who had a time of 1:33.37. Beatrice Butler (Missouri City, Texas) and Kristine Wowelko (Bridgeport, MA) placed second and third with times of 1:33.80 and 1:38.99.
Both the men and women's team won the 400-yard freestyle relay. Led by
Paul Cabrey (Allentown, PA/William Allen) (Allentown, PA), the men finished with a time of 3:58.10, while the women finished with a 4:13.05 mark, led by Alyssa Cortese (New Hartford, NY).
Cortese also won the women's 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 1:07.44, totaling nine points for Utica.
The next meet for the Pioneers will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Utica College Pool against Skidmore College.
