UC MEN FALL IN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AT SUNYIT TIP OFF TOURNAMENT

Senior Diloo Brown (Harlem, NY/Technical Careers Institute) had a near triple-double and four Wildcats scored in the double digits as the SUNYIT men's basketball team handed local rival Utica College its first loss of the season with a 71-58 victory in the Wildcat Tip-Off Tournament Championship game at the Campus Center Gymnasium Saturday. The Wildcats are now 2-0 on the year, while Utica fell to 3-1.

Brown had a dominant performance to lead SUNYIT, finishing with game-highs of 25 points, 18 rebounds and seven assists. The six-foot guard was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after finishing with two-game averages of 21.5 points, 13 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.5 steals per contest while shooting 46 percent from the field.

After the contest opened with a 4-4 tie after five minutes of play, the Wildcats went on a 12-2 run to go up 16-6 with 9:22 left to go before the break. Utica would go on a 12-3 run of its own to tie the game at 19 all with just under six minutes left in the half, but a 9-2 run by SUNYIT to close out the half would make it 28-21 at the break.

Brown nailed a three to open the second half and give his team a 10-point lead, and the Wildcats would never look back, extending their lead by as much 20 points and cruising to victory. SUNYIT was able to pull away by shooting 54 percent from the field in the half while holding Utica to just 34 percent.

Junior David Golembiowski (Barneveld, NY/Holland Patent) finished with 16 points, seven boards and a tournament-high five blocks and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Junior Ricky Charles (Brooklyn, NY/Fashion Institute of Technology) scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds off the bench, while senior Floyd Fitzpatrick Thorne (Brooklyn, NY/Paul Smith's College) registered nine points and five assists and junior Kevin Cappiello (Youngsville, NY/Sullivan West) had six points, six assists, five rebounds and a team-high four steals.

James Patterson had a team-high 22 points for Utica, while Patrick Goodman recorded seven points and three rebounds. Both players were named to the All-Tournament team.

In the tournament's consolation game, Keuka defeated the College of St. Joseph 71-65. Junior Diamond Booker, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led Keuka to victory with 11 points, a game-high 15 rebounds and two blocks, while Calvin Logins registered 16 points and 11 rebounds. Brad Drysdale had a game-high 22 points to go along with 13 boards and two blocks for St. Joseph, while Doug Childs scored 17 and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
