WOMEN'S HOOPS EARNS 11TH STRAIGHT WIN

Utica, NY (Feb. 13, 2009) - The Utica College women's basketball team extended its win streak to 11 games with a 66-52 victory over visiting Nazareth College Friday night. Sophomore forward Jessica Berry (21) and senior guard Mallory Davis (18) combined for 39 points in the victory.

The Pioneers, who have won 12 of their last 13 games, improved to 17-5 overall and 11-2 in conference play. UC has not won 11 straight games since 1984-85 when the Pioneers won 13 in a row and eventually made an appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Golden Flyers evened their record at 11-11 overall on the year and they dropped to 5-8 in conference play.

UC jumped out to a commanding 24-13 lead after Berry capped a 20-5 run over the course of 6:32 mid-way through the first half with a jumper. Nazareth closed to within seven points, 25-18, with 3:51 to go in the first half of play. The Pioneers were able to answer with a 10-4 run over the final 3:51 of play to take a 35-22 advantage as the halftime buzzer sounded.

Laura Keating knocked down a 3-pointer 2:06 into the second half to give UC a 16 point lead, 40-24, at the 17:54 mark. The Golden Flyers were able to cut the lead to seven points on two occasions in the second half but UC converted on 10-of-12 free throws down the stretch to earn the convincing 14 point victory.

Katie McGee added 13 points for UC on 9-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe. Berry added 14 rebounds to go with her 21 points, while Davis snagged a game-high four steals and added 18 points.

Brittany Wilson and Ashley Gallagher each netted ten points apiece to pace the Golden Flyers offensive attack. Lizzie Barlow hauled in a team-best 11 rebounds and chipped in with six points. Wilson also added a game-high five blocks.

UC returns to action Sunday when they travel to Stevens Institute of Technology for a key Empire 8 Conference contest at 2 p.m. Nazareth continues its three-game road trip with a stop at RIT on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
