Utica, NY (04/03/09) - Senior guard Doug Herring (Poughkeepsie/Poughkeepsie) of the Utica College men's basketball team was named a 2008-09 Division III Upstate Men's Basketball Second Team All-star by the ECAC Thursday.
Herring was also named to the NABC Division III All-District East Region second team on Monday, March 30 and to the Empire 8 Men's Basketball All-Conference Team for the 2008-2009 season. He has received First team honors to the E8 All-conference team for three consecutive years.
Herring has been named Empire 8 conference player of the week three times in his four-year career at UC and was named Utica College's male athlete of the week twice in the 08-09 season.
Herring finished the season ranked third in the conference in steals with 52 and ninth in the E8 in scoring averaging 15.6 points per game. He also finished fourth in the conference in assists with a team-high 109 (4.3 per game). Herring also recorded 17 blocks in 25 games this season.
The senior guard leaves some big shoes to fill next season. Herring currently ranks first on the Utica College all-time assist list with 451 and second on the College's all-time scoring list with 1,587 career points.
The Pioneers finished third in the conference posting a 17-8 overall record and an 11-5 record in the Empire 8, which was good enough for a No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. UC ended up losing to RIT, the eventual conference champions, in the semifinals of the conference tournament to finish its 2008-09 season.
