Amber Comeau (Medford, MA) netted the game-winning goal 5:21 into the first overtime period as the Utica College women's soccer team defeated Empire 8 Conference rival Alfred University 2-1 Sunday. The Pioneers out shot Alfred 26-7 on the day. Freshman
Jamie Hillman (Hornell, NY) scored her first collegiate goal in the 40th minute to give UC a 1-0 lead in the first half.
The Pioneers are 8-0 against the Saxons dating back to 2002 and they have outscored Alfred 21-4 over the course of those eight meetings. Utica is now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play this season. With the loss Alfred drops to 1-4-1 overall.
Alfred made a late charge in the contest, netting the equalizer at the 86:17 mark when Erin Crandall connected with Erika Garrett to knot the score at 1-1 with just under four minutes to go in regulation.
Comeau's first collegiate goal came unassisted and lifted the Pioneers to their second win in three games. Junior goalie
Monique Schneeberger (Lowville, NY) stopped two shots in her second win of the season.
Alfred goalie Shanna Ewoldt made 13 saves in 95:21 minutes of work for the Saxons.
UC returns to action Wednesday for their third straight conference game against visiting Elmira on the Utica College Soccer Field. The contest is scheduled for 4 p.m.
