PIONEERS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT - ADVANCE TO 2-0 IN CONFERENCE PLAY

UTICA, NY - Sophomore Rebecca Corsones (Hurley, NY) netted the lone goal of the contest in the ninth minute after receiving a beautiful crossing pass from Hayley Coon (Taberg, NY) to lift the Utica College field hockey team to a 1-0 Empire 8 Conference victory over Washington & Jefferson Sunday. Utica is now 3-1 all-time against W & J and they have now defeated the Presidents in two consecutive meetings. Sophomore goalie Monica Storms (Owego, NY) stopped three shots in her fourth shut out of the season. The Pioneer defense, led by senior Shannon Moats (Vernon, NY), has allowed just one goal in the the past three games.

The Pioneers have now won three straight games and improved to 5-3 overall and they became the first Empire 8 Conference team to improve to 2-0. The Presidents snapped a two game winning streak and dropped to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Corsones goal, her first of the season, gives her a three points on the year, while the assist for Coons also give her three total points this season.

W & J goalie Roslynn Reynoso (Fallbrook, CA) stopped two shots in net for the Presidents. Both teams totaled six shots on the day while Washington & Jefferson posted seven penalty corner opportunities compared to the Pioneers two.

Utica returns to action next Sunday when they host conference foe Nazareth College at 1 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at www.ucpioneers.com. The Presidents remain on the road for the third of a four game road trip when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan Friday. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
