The Utica College men's hockey team rallied from a three goal deficit to tie the game at 3-3 with 8:06 to go in regulation but Curry answered with the game-winning goal less than four minutes later as the Colonels knocked off the Pioneers 4-3 Thursday night at the Aud. Kyle Zobler, Tim Coffman and Eric Peterson each netted one goal as the Pioneers snapped a two game winning streak.
The Pioneers are now 0-3 all-time against Curry and they have lost all three of those games by just one goal. Utica drops to 6-7-3 overall on the year, while the Colonels, who are receiving votes in the USCHO.com national poll, snapped a four game skid and improved to 8-4-1.
The Pioneers fourth ranked power play unit came up short on the evening, going 0-for-7, as Curry goalie Zachary Cardella continued to come up with big saves late en route to his second victory of the season.
Curry opened up a 3-0 lead over the course of the first 25 minutes of the contest behind goals from Steven Mohler, Josh Kamrass and Michael Guzzon.
The Pioneers answered with three straight goals to make the contest interesting. Sophomore Tim Coffman scored his team-high 12th goal of the season midway through the second period off assists from seniors Vincent Nucci and Matt Fitzgibbons.
Freshman Eric Peterson cut the Colonels lead to one, 3-2, when he netted his seventh goal of the season 6:06 into the third period of play. Freshman Jordan Smith earned his first collegiate point when he assisted Peterson and sophomore Brian Gibbons was also credited with an assist on the Pioneers second goal.
Freshman Kyle Zobler netted the game-tying goal in the 11th minute of the third to knot the score at 3-3 with 8:06 to go in the game. Seniors Dave Burkholder and Sean McKevitt assisted Zobler.
Ryan Barlock's second goal of the season with 4:36 to go in regulation proved to be the game-winner for Curry. Josh Kamrass and Ryan Warsofsky assisted on Barlock's tally.
Junior Justin Bolla made 29 saves in net for Utica, while Cardella added 25 saves in 60 minutes of action for the Colonels.
Curry outshot Utica 33-28 on the day and the Colonels went 1-for-4 on power play opportunities.
The Pioneers have nine regular season games left on their scheduled beginning with Manhattanville at the Aud next Friday night at 7 p.m. All nine of the Pioneers remaining games are ECAC Men's West Conference games.
Curry returns to the ice on Friday night when they travel to Geneseo State for a non conference game at 7 p.m.
