The Utica College men's hockey team is set to host nationally-ranked No. 8 Manhattanville College in an ECAC Men's West Conference contest Friday night at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. for the Pioneers' final contest of a five game home stand. Tickets at the door are $5 for adults and $2 for non-Utica College students. UC students, faculty and staff are free with valid identification.
The Pioneers are currently 6-3 overall while the Valiant's have a 5-2-1 record. Both squads have a conference record of 1-2, defeating Hobart and losing to Elmira and Neumann. UC enters the contest coming off argueably its biggest win of the season, 3-1, against traditional power Amherst at the Aud on Saturday.
Utica, which averages 3,274 fans per home contest, is currently led by junior captain
Tim Coffman (Elverson, PA/Laconia (AJHL)) who has 13 points, including ten assists and three goals. Sophomore
Evan Chlanda (Islip, NY/Springfield (EJHL)) ranks second on the team with 11 points on four goals and seven assists. Next in line are nine freshmen, including
Jon Gaffney (Dover, NJ/Springfield Blues (NAHL)) and Trevor Hertz, who currently lead the team in goals with five each.
In net for UC will either be freshman
Evan Smith (Penticton, British Columbia/Calgary Royals (AJHL)) or classmate
Nick Therrien (Rochester, NH/NY Apple Core (EJHL)), who have split time over the course of the last nine games. Smith is recently coming off a solid win against Amherst where he stopped 26 shots and allowed only one goal as he improved to 4-1 on the season. Therrien is currently 2-2 with a .904 save percentage and one shut out.
Manhattanville leads the all-time series 18-6-4 dating back to 2001-2002. The Valiants are fresh off a 3-3 tie with nationally-ranked No. 8 Williams College on Sunday.
Following Manhattanville, the Pioneers will hit the road for two non-conference games against Buffalo State on Dec. 4 and nationally-ranked No. 1 Oswego State on Dec. 10. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
