The Utica College baseball team lost a double header to Empire 8 rival Ithaca College Saturday losing the first game 11-2 before falling in the second 11-1. The Pioneers were led by freshman
Jeremy Clark (Thorofare, NJ/Woodbury) (Thorofare, NJ) who went three-for-six on the day with an RBI and two walks.
The Bombers were able to jump out to an early lead in the first inning, scoring four runs behind TJ Abone and David Ahonen. UC would find itself in a seven run hole in the fourth inning as senior
Russ Haentges (Cowlesville, NY) singled to right center to score junior
Anthony DiSalvo (Washingtonville, NY) from second to put the Pioneers on the board.
In the top of the sixth, freshman
Jeremy Clark (Thorofare, NJ/Woodbury) would walk to start off the inning. After DiSalvo singled to second base, junior
Kevin Oquendo (Caguas,PR) grounded into a double play that moved Clark to third base. A wild pitch on the next at bat would bring Clark in to score as the Pioneer run total increased to two.
UC would go on to lose by a score of 11-2 as sophomore pitcher
Matt Zitt (Latrobe, PA) falls to 2-3 on the season.
In the second half of the double header, the Pioneers would find themselves down big early once again as they gave up six runs in the first three innings. In the top of the fifth inning freshman
Joe Sportman (Albany, NY) singled to right center as to get on base for the Pioneers. After DiSalvo walked to put runners in scoring position, Clark hit a single to right field to score Sportman from second as the Pioneers earned their lone run of the game.
Utica College would go on to lose 11-1 as
Nate Sortino (Oxford, NY) lost his second game of the season.
UC falls to 5-13 overall and 1-3 in conference as the Bombers improve to 9-11 and 4-2 in the Empire 8.
The Pioneers will try to snap a three game losing streak this Wednesday when they take on cross town rival SUNY IT at the Utica College baseball field with an expected start time of 2 p.m.
