The Utica College baseball team was swept in a doubleheader match-up at Oneonta State on Wednesday. The Pioneers lost 8-0 in game one, and dropped their second game 8-2.
In game one the Red Dragons came hot out of the gates scoring six runs in the first inning. Oneonta was able to score three runs on a series of errors caused by the Pioneers. Sophomore pitcher
Matt Zitt (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) (Latrobe, Pa.) did not survive the inning after walking 5-of-10 batters. Oneonta continued to score two more runs in the third and fourth inning on pitcher Robert Amor (Oxford, N.Y.). Third baseman
Anthony Di Salvo (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) (Washingtonville, N.Y.) and shortstop
Chris Podlucky (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) (Grand Island, N.Y.) had four assists each, but was not enough to figure out the Red Dragon's offense. Oneonta's Corey Andresen pitched a solid five innings striking out three Pioneers while only allowing three hits.
The Pioneers could not overcome the first game deficit and dropped the second game to Oneonta. Utica led off the first inning scoring two runs off of an Oneonta error and an RBI off a sacrifice fly by Russ Haentges (Cowlesville, N.Y.). The Red Dragons answered back with a run in the bottom of the first, followed by four runs in the second inning to seal the victory. DiSalvo got on base three times in the game while scoring one run. Podlucky's strong defensive performance continued in game two with four assists and two putouts.
The struggling Pioneers drop to 6-16 on the year and 1-3 in conference. Oneonta jumps to 21-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play. The two wins against UC earn the Red Dragons their eighth consecutive 20-win season.
UC will travel to RIT on Saturday to play a two game series over the weekend. The contests for Saturday and Sunday are scheduled for 1 p.m. at the RIT Baseball Field.
