Senior Michael Brodhead scored a career-high seven points as the Utica College men's lacrosse team defeated visiting Elmira College 19-9 in Empire 8 Conference play Saturday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Senior Tanner Stewart added three goals and one assist, while classmate Andrew Waite chipped in with two goals and two assists. The Pioneers have now won four of their last five games and evened their record to 3-3 in conference play.
The Pioneers never trailed in the contest, out shooting the Soaring Eagles 41-34, and UC also earned a 31-21 ground ball advantage.
Brodhead opened the scoring on the day at the 12:22 mark when he found the back of the net for the 17th time this season off an assist from classmate Vincent Piccolo. Piccolo would finish the day with a career-high two goals and one assist.
The two teams exchanged goals for the remainder of the first quarter and the score was knotted at 3-3 headed into the second quarter.
Utica opened up a three goal lead by way of three straight goals in the first six minutes of the second quarter. Andrew Waite, Tanner Stewart and freshman Ben Winkler all netted goals in the second quarter to lift the Pioneers to a 6-3 lead.
Elmira added a man-up goal with 3:03 left in the half, but the Pioneers responded with five seconds to go in the half to give UC a 7-4 lead before the intermission.
After Elmira opened the second half scoring the Pioneers put the game out of reach by scoring six straight goals in a span of 4:23 to take a 13-5 lead. Elmira cut the UC lead to 13-6 before the Pioneers went on a four goal run to lead by 11 goals with 9:31 to go in the game.
Elmira outscored UC 3-2 in the final nine minutes but it proved to be too late as the Pioneers earned the convincing ten goal victory.
Michael Bulger netted two goals and added one assist. The all-conference attacker has a team-best 52 points this season (35 goals, 17 assists).
Senior goalie Travis Wright stopped 12 shots in his fifth victory of the season. Brad Levick led the way for Elmira with four goals and one assist, while Rick Acorn added two goals.
The Pioneers hit the road for their final two regular season contests. UC will travel to conference for RIT Wednesday to take on the Tigers at 4 p.m.
