Oneonta, N.Y. (1/18/2011) – The Utica College men's basketball team struggled in the first half of play, scoring just 23 points in the first 20 minutes, and went on to lose 83-60 at Hartwick College Tuesday night. The Pioneers (8-6, 2-4 E8) snapped a two game winning streak as sophomore forward
Jeff Ward (Ossining, NY/Ossining High School) shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor on his way to scoring a team-high 15 points.
Hartwick knocked down 15 3-pointers on its way to improving to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play. Andres Carpio led the way for the Hawks with a game-high 24 points (six 3-pointers).
The home squad outscored the Pioneers 20-5 in the first 9:04 of the contest to take a commanding 15 point lead midway through the first half. UC was able to cut the lead to 11 at one point but the Hawks managed to extend the lead back to 16 and took a 39-23 lead as the halftime buzzer sounded.
Hartwick opened up the second half with a 24-6 run in the first 4:16 to take a 55-29 lead. The Pioneers were able to cut the lead to 16 points, 60-44, with 12:42 to go but that was as close as they would get and the Hawks went on to win by 23.
Senior forward
Robert Whyte (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Township) continued his hot second semester with 14 points and ten rebounds off the bench.
Will Abrams (Somerset, NJ/Rutgers Prep School) added 12 points for UC, while guards Kevin Johnson and
James Patterson (Poughkeepsie, NY/Poughkeepsie) combined for 12 points.
The Pioneers return to the hardwood on Friday night when they host conference foe Nazareth College at 8 p.m.
