Utica, N.Y. (1/23/2011) – The Utica College women's hockey team used three third period goals to complete the season series sweep of visiting Williams College with a 4-1 victory over the Ephs at the Utica Memorial Auditorium Sunday. Sophomore forward
Meghan McMahon (Gardner, MA/St. Marks (MA)) led the way for the Pioneers with one goal and two assists.
UC improved to 9-6 overall while the visitors fell to 2-8 on the season. Utica earned a 41-27 shot
advantage and junior net minder Marrisa Hotaling stopped 26 shots in her fourth victory of the year. Earlier in the season the Pioneers traveled to Williams and earned a 3-1 victory by way of three third period goals on Dec. 8.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first 20 minutes of play but UC opened up the scoring 56 seconds into the second period when senior assistant captain Samantha Glocking tallied her second goal of the season off assists from
Lynny Gonzales (Rochester, NY/New Hampton Prep) and Megan McMahon. Williams answered with 1:36 to go in the second stanza and knotted the score at 1-1 when Sam Weinstein netted her third goal of the season on the power-play.
Utica would score the eventual game-winner midway through the third at 10:18, when
Mary Fusco (Enfield, CT/Salve Regina University) scored her first goal of the year, to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead. Freshmen linemates
Meredith Tice (Hershey, PA/Washington Pride) and Brittany Dellechiaie assisted on Fusco's goal.
The Pioneers went on to score two late insurance goals to seal the non conference victory. McMahon recorded her fifth goal of the year off assists from
MacKenzie Roy (Concord, NH/Cushing Academy) and
Meagan Sudik (West Bend, WI/Wisconsin Wild) at the 16:10 marker. Senior forward
Darcy Hier (Centennial, CO/Colorado Selects) added her third goal of the year to close out the scoring with 30 seconds to go in the contest. McMahon and sophomore
Nicole Joslyn (Whitesboro, NY/Rochester Edge (NY)) assisted on Hiers' team-high 19th point of the season.
Rachel Nguyen stopped 37 shots in net for the Ephs. Ally Ensor and Haena Lee were each credited with assists on Williams' lone goal.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday as they host conference foe SUNY Potsdam at “The Aud”. The puck is scheduled to drop at 4 p.m. The Bears are currently 6-9-1 overall including a 2-8 record in the ECAC Women's West Conference.
