The Utica College women's basketball team (9-8, 5-3 Empire 8) lost to host Stevens Institute of Technology(14-3, 7-2 Empire 8) Friday night, 60-58, at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, NJ. The Ducks move into second place while the Pioneers drop to fourth in the Empire 8 Conference. Senior
Jessica Berry (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) tallied her 11th double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 boards.
Stevens would take an early 2-0 lead, at 19:21 in the first period. The Pioneers then went on a 9-0 run to take to the largest lead of the first half, 9-2. UC controlled the majority of the first half shooting 44% on 11-of-25 from the floor while holding the Ducks to 34.3% from the floor and 1-of-9 from behind the arc. However, Utica would go on a 2:24 drought, alllowing Stevens to pull within one-point of the lead, 27-26, headed into the locker room.
UC open up the second half on a 11-4 run over the first three minutes to take a 38-30 lead at 17:07. The Ducks would come right back with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes taking the lead, 41-38, at 14:05. Utica would tie the game at 41-41, off a three-pointer from senior guard
Devon Croll (Vernon, NY/Vernon Verona Sherrill). The game would remain tied for the next 3:50 with neither team scoring for almost four minutes. The final ten minutes would feature five lead changes and four ties. Senior
Casey Orlando (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) hit one of her two free throws with .11 seconds remaining to give UC a one-point lead, 58-57. However, Jillian Barrett would hit a three-pointer for the Ducks with one second left, off the back-board, to give the Ducks the victory.
Sophomore
Meghan Fiore (Epping, NH/Epping) added 15 points, four rebounds and three assists for UC. Croll and guard
Katie McGee (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth) would combine for 11 points, five boards and dishes, and six steals.
The Pioneers return to the hardwood Tuesday as they welcome Elmira College for the team's first meeting of the season. The Soaring Eagles are currently 4-14 overall and last in the conference with a record 1-8.
