Saratoga Springs, N.Y. (10/13/11) – The Utica College field hockey program dropped a 3-1 decision against nationally-ranked No. 5 Skidmore College Wednesday night.  The Pioneers' record moved to 8-5 overall as freshman Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) scored her team-best ninth goal of the season.

UC hits the road for game two of a three game road trip on Saturday when it travels to Oneonta, N.Y. to take on Hartwick College in a pivotal Empire 8 Conference match-up.  The Pioneers are currently in a four-way tie for first place in the E8 and a win over Hartwick will help Utica take one step closer to earning their first-ever conference regular season championship.

UC fell into an early 1-0 hole when the Throughbred's Annie Rosencrans netted her eight goal of the season in the seventh minute.  UC goalie Monica Storms (Owego, NY/Owego) and the Pioneer defense were able to hold one of the nation's top team's scoreless for the remainder of the first half and Skidmore (11-1) took a 1-0 advantage into intermission.

Skidmore poured it on with two goals in the first 17 minutes of the second half to take a 3-0 advantage.  Kelly Blackhurst and Sam Skott scored goals for the home team.

Norton broke up Skidmore's bid at a shutout when she tallied UC's goal at 64:54.

Storms finished the day with six saves in net, while freshman Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) added one defensive save for Utica.
