Utica, N.Y. (1026/2011) – The Utica College field hockey team made a late charge when freshman Becki Vivaqua scored her first collegiate goal off a penalty shot in the 67th minute, but it proved to be too late, as visiting Oneonta State earned a 3-2 victory in non conference play Wednesday night. The Pioneers will now look ahead to Friday night when they travel to St. John Fisher College for a key empire 8 Conference contest. If the Pioneers beat the Cardinals (1-14, 0-6 E8) on Friday night they will secure the program's first-ever conference regular season title and the right to host the conference tournament on Nov. 5th and 6th.
Oneonta came out of the gates strong and took a 1-0 lead when Megan Warning scored her team-high 16th goal in the 4th minute of an assist from Ashley Morgan.
The Pioneers (10-7) answered less than six minutes later when
Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) scored her team-high 13th goal of the season after a centering pass from
Ally Sanders (Endicott, NY/Maine Endwell). Mackey's goal, from ten yards out, beat Red Dragon goalie Tess Tracy on the left side and knotted the score at 1-1. Tracy finished the day with a game-high 13 saves.
The rest of the first half remained scoreless as the Pioneers outshot the visitors 10-2 but they could not seem to find the back of the net.
Oneonta came out firing in the second half when Warning netted her second goal of the evening, off an assist from Morgan again, to give the Red Dragons a 2-1 lead in the 37th minute.
Jacqueline Camp added an insurance goal for the visitors in the 65th minute, her fifth of the year, to give the Red Dragons a two goal advantage.
UC would not go down easily as Vivaqua converted on a penalty shot in the 67th minute. Oneonta was able to control the ball for the remainder of the contest and the final horn sounded with the Red Dragons up by one goal, 3-2.
