Utica, NY – The Utica College field hockey team (10-7, 5-1 Empire 8) will wrap up its 2011 regular-season campaign on the road Friday as they travel to Rochester, NY to face the Cardinals of St. John Fisher.
The Match-Up: Friday's contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. under the lights of Growney Stadium on the campus of St. John Fisher. The Cardinals, in their inaugural season, are 2-14 overall and winless in the Empire 8 Conference. However, Fisher is coming off a 3-1 victory over Morrisville State Wednesday and has played opponents tight of late. Despite their winless conference record, St. John Fisher has lost the last three games by a mere one goal margin to Hartwick, Ithaca, and Nazareth.
Post-Season Scenario: The Pioneers need to beat the Cardinals on Friday night to secure the program's first-ever outright regular season conference title and the right to host the conference tournament on Nov. 5th and 6th. Utica shared the conference's regular season crown with Ithaca College back in 2006.
The Mackey & Steele-Norton Crusade: Freshmen
Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) and
Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) are in the running for Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Year. Both are tied for first in the conference with 13 goals each. They are atop the point leaders in the E8 as Mackey is averaging 1.76 and Steele-Norton 1.69 per contest.
The Storm in Net: Senior goalie
Monica Storms (Owego, NY/Owego) has a save percentage of .744 as she has tallied 96 saves while facing 206 shots. Storms has allowed just 33 goals in 17 games this season resulting in a goal against average of 1.87, which ranks second the E8.
Around the League: Utica and Stevens (9-6, 5-1 Empire 8) are the No. 1 and No.2 seed currently with UC securing the tie breaker over the Ducks at the hands of an early season , 5-3, victory in Hoboken, NJ. Washington & Jefferson (11-2, 4-2 Empire 8) maintains third place and will square off against Stevens Saturday to determine their fate. Hartwick (6-9, 3-3 Empire 8) and Nazareth (4-11, 3-3 Empire 8) are tied for the No. 4 seed and will battle it out Saturday on Naz's territory.
