Utica, NY (10-27-11) – The Utica College women's soccer team (5-10, 2-4 Empire 8) will tour to Rochester, NY Saturday in its hopes of extending its season as they challenge St. John Fisher. The Empire 8 Conference match-up will be held at Growney Stadium and is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.
Post-Season Protocol: Utica has now won two in a row and they look ahead to Saturday's key E8 contest in Fisher territory. UC can earn a spot in the coveted conference tournament with a win against the Cardinals (yielding no more than one goal) and Elmira loss to Stevens or a win over Fisher by at least three goals and an Elmira loss to Stevens.
Pioneers vs. Cardinals: In heads-up play since 2003, the programs' are 3-3-2 against each other. The contests have featured two, 1-1, double overtime bouts in consecutive years back in 2003 and 2004 followed by three consecutive UC victories leading to the 2008 season. However, the Cardinals have had the Pioneers number of late, winning the last three years' by one goal defeats.
Glockling's Goal: Senior goalie
Samantha Glockling (Carleton Place, ONT/Tilton School) leads the E8 conference in saves with 98 and is second with 6.50 per game. She has started in all 15 games for UC and has a goal against average of 2.72 and a save percentage of .705.
The S.S. Factor: The UC offense is led by junior
Samantha Spohler (East Durham, NY/Cairo Durham) and sophomore
Sarah Southwell (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), who have accumulated 35 of the Pioneers' 60 points this season. Spohler leads the squad with 19 points on eight goals and three assists. Southwell has accompanied her with 16 points including six goals and four assists.
E8 Projected Playoff: The 2011 Empire 8 Conference Tournament projections currently have Stevens as the No. 1 seed at 5-0-1, Nazareth in second with a 5-0-2 conference record and nationally-ranked No. 21 Ithaca holding third at 5-1-1. The No. 4 seed will be decided following Sunday's match-ups and will be granted to Elmira, Fisher or Utica, depending. Elmira will travel to Hoboken, NJ Saturday to test national power Stevens.
