Pioneers Start Season With Weekend Sweep - UC Tops Castleton 2-0

Sophomore Meredith Tice netted her first goal of the year for UC
Utica 2, Castleton 0 - Box Score

Utica, NY (10-29-11) - The Utica College women's hockey team defeated Castleton State, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.  The Pioneers completed the weekend sweep of non conference opponents New England College and Castleton, on their way to an unblemished 2-0 record to start the season.  Sophomore goalie Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) stopped ten shots in her second collegiate shut out.

UC broke the ice at 16:58 in the first period when Tice found the back of the net off dishes from junior's Meghan Willett (Worcester, MA/Cushing Academy) and Carmen Johnson (Falls Church, VA/Washington Pride) to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

Just under seven minutes into the second period Utica got an insurance goal as sophomore Brittany DelleChiaie (Leominster, MA/The Winchendon School) registered her second goal of the year, at 6:58, to give UC a 2-0 lead.  Sophomore Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) and freshman Samantha Pucci (Pearl River, NY/Connecticut Polar Bears) tallied assists on the play.

Neither team converted on the power-play as the Spartans went 0-for-6 and the Pioneers, 0-for-5.  However, Utica outshot the visitors 41-10 on the afternoon.

The Pioneers return to the ice next weekend as they travel to Rochester, NY to face the RIT Tigers in a weekend set.  The puck is scheduled to drop at 3 p.m. both days.
