Pioneers Lose to E8 Rival Elmira in Women's Soccer

UTICA,NY (10/08/2011)- The Utica College women's soccer team (3-8, 1-3 Empire 8) lost to Elmira College (6-3, 3-0 Empire 8) 2-0 Saturday afternoon on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.  Junior Samantha Spohler (East Durham, NY/Cairo Durham) led the Pioneers with six of their ten shots. 

After a scoreless 44 minutes, Elmira's Kelsie DeKarski chased down a pass from sophomore Emily Karpinski  and went in on a partial breakaway.  DeKarski chipped the ball over Utica goalkeeper Samantha Glockling (Carleton Place, ONT/Tilton School) for her first goal of the season. 

Elmira found the back of the net again at 55:11 when freshman Mollie Hamilton ran down the right sidelines and centered a pass to junior Kelsey Kiel who deflected the ball passed Glockling to give the Soaring Eagles a 2-0 lead.   

Spohler had a game-high six shots on goal while senior Chelsea Way (Cuyler, NY/DeRuyter) and sophomore Quinn Freeman-Roche (Putnam Valley, NY/Ursuline) each registered two shots on goal for UC. 

Senior goalkeeper Samantha Glockling (Carleton Place, ONT/Tilton School) recorded three saves and allowed two goals in the defeat.

The Pioneers return to action Sunday as they host Nazareth College at the Utica College Soccer Field for a 12 p.m. game.  The Golden Flyers are currently 4-2-3 overall and 1-0-1 in the Empire 8.
