Box Score Oneonta 69, Utica 58 - Box Score

Oneonta, N.Y. (11/28/2011) – Utica senior point guard Katie McGee (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth) netted 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor, while junior forward Meghan Fiore (Epping, NH/Epping) added 11 rebounds and eight points, but it was not enough as host Oneonta shot 45.3% from the floor on its way to a 69-58 victory Monday night.

The win for Oneonta was its first of the season as they are now 1-3 overall.  The loss for the Pioneers evened their record at 2-2.  Oneonta led by nine points at halftime due in large part to Maddison Slagle scoring 16 of her 23 points in the opening 20 minutes.  Slagle hit 7-of-12 shots in the first half including 2-of-5 from behind the arc.

Utica's only run in the game came at the beginning of the second half when they put together a 9-2 run to cut Oneonta's lead to 37-35.  A three-point basket by McGee capped the run.  Back-to-back three-point baskets by Slagle and classmate Samantha Szkotak fueled a 20-1 door-closing run over the next 10 minutes that put the game out of reach for Utica.  Szkotak, from nearby New York Mills, finished the contest with 17 points and six rebounds.

Alyssa Filkins (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) and freshman Mara Newland each netted eight points for UC, while senior Justine Karst (Olean, NY/Hinsdale) totaled six points and six rebounds.

The Pioneers look to get back to their winning ways when they return to action on Tuesday night at Wells College where they will take on the Express at 7 p.m.
