Utica, N.Y. (12/13/2011) – The Utica College women's basketball was held to just 14 first half points on its way to a 63-39 non-conference loss against visiting Union College Tuesday night.  The Pioneers struggled shooting from the floor (26.2%), while the Dutchwomen featured a balanced scoring offense as 13 different players landed in the scoring column.

UC's record moved to 5-4 overall, while Union has now won three of its last four games and improved to 4-3 overall.  The Pioneers will return to the hardwood on Jan. 3 when they travel to local rival SUNYIT.

Junior forward Meghan Fiore (Epping, NH/Epping) led the way for Utica with 15 points and eight rebounds, while senior point guard Katie McGee (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth) registered a team-high ten rebounds and chipped in with eight points.

The Pioneers long range shooting woes were evident in the first half as they went 0-for-9 from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes.  Union jumped out to a 16 point lead, 20-4, over the course of the first 12:31 of the contest.  UC answered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to single digits, 20-11, with 2:34 left in the half but the Dutchwomen were able to respond again and took a 11 point lead into the locker room at half.

Union maintained  its double-digit lead in the second half and used a 22-5 run midway through the second half to extend its lead to as many as 28 points, 58-30, with 5:45 left in the contest.

Shayla Madden led Union with 13 points and five rebounds, while Rachel Beaulac added 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Senior forward Justine Karst (Olean, NY/Hinsdale) netted six points on 2-of-5 shooting from the floor for UC, while freshman Adriana Surprenant (Utica, NY/New York Mills) provided a spark off the bench, scoring three points and snagging three steals.
