(2/13/2011) – The Utica College women's hockey team completed the weekend sweep of visiting Chatham University after a 9-1 victory in ECAC Women's West Conference play at the Utica Memorial Auditorium Sunday afternoon. Lynny Gonzales (Rochester, NY/New Hampton Prep),
Darcy Hier (Centennial, CO/Colorado Selects) and
Meagan Sudik (West Bend, WI/Wisconsin Wild) made their final game at the Aud a memorable one. Gonzales and Hier each tallied three goals and one assist a piece, while Sudik registered a game-high five points on one goal and four helpers.
Utica, which beat Chatham 9-0 at Whitestown Community Center on Saturday night, improved to 12-10
overall and evened its record at 8-8 in conference play. The visiting Cougars have now lost 16 straight and dropped to 0-16 overall.
The Pioneers opened the scoring early in the contest when Sudik netted an even strength goal less than two minutes into the first period. Sophomore
Carmen Johnson (Falls Church, VA/Washington Pride) assisted on Sudik's sixth goal of the year. UC went on to add two more first period goals to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Hier netted her sixth goal of the year of assists from
Rebecca Heim (Westwood, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) and Meghan Willet at the 3:34 marker and Gonzales then scored a power-play goal at 11:04. Sophomore
Nicole Joslyn (Whitesboro, NY/Rochester Edge (NY)) and freshman
Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) assisted on Gonzales's 35th career goal.
UC added three more second period goals to increase its lead to 6-0 with less than two minutes to go in the stanza. Hier tallied her second of the evening on a beautiful breakaway goal. Junior
MacKenzie Roy (Concord, NH/Cushing Academy) assisted on Hier's seventh goal of the season.
Samantha Glockling (Carleton Place, ONT/Tilton School) and
Meredith Tice (Hershey, PA/Washington Pride) each found the back of the net before the end of the period to increase UC's lead to six. Sudik, Joslyn, Myers and freshman Brittany Dellechiaie were each credited with assists on the goals.
Chatham found the back of the net for the first time all weekend when freshman forward Morgan Becer netted her first collegiate goal, on the power-play, with 50 seconds left in the second period. Sydney Williams and Casey Morfield assisted on the goal.
Sudik, Gonzales and Hier broke the game wide open in the third period. Gonzales scored the first goal of the third just 3:48 into the period off assists from Sudik and senior defender
Ann Rancourt (Cleveland, OH/Ohio Phantom Flames). Hier then knocked home her third goal of the game off assists from Gonzales and Sudik with less than 12 minutes to go in the contest. Gonzales closed out the scoring at the 12:05 mark when she netted her eighth goal of the season off assists from Hier and Sudik.
Senior goalie
Laurel Simer (Faribault, MN/Shattuck-St. Marys) totaled 19 saves in her final home game for Utica. Chatham net minder Amanda Kohlbecker stopped 31 shots in her first start of the season. Utica outshot the visitors 40-20 on the day.
The Pioneers return to the ice on Thursday when they travel to Amherst College for a non conference game at 7 p.m. UC will then travel to Plattsburgh on Saturday for game one of a two game conference set against the Cardinals.
