Utica, NY - The Utica College men's lacrosse team (1-3) will host cross-town rival Hamilton College (3-0) Wednesday in the Inaugural "Contineer Cup". Face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium with the winner claiming rights to the coveted "Contineer Cup". The teams' will also be taking part in a "Pink" initiative to support breast cancer awareness.
The players will wear pink practice jerseys during warm-ups and pink socks throughout the contest. All proceeds from the event will go to the Perfect Fit Boutique of the Regional Cancer Center of Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare. There will be a 50/50 raffle throughout the game and half of the winnings will go to the foundation while the other half will go to the winner. A donation table will also be set up in front of the stadium.
“This is a great event for the players, coaches, and the local community”, said sixth year head coach
Mike Parnell. “We look to forward to starting a new tradition that will last for years to come."
Last season, Hamilton beat the Pioneers 8-7 at Campus Road Athletic Field in Clinton, NY. Since 2006, the Continentals hold a 5-0 record against UC. However, three of those losses came by one goal and another was a 10-8 loss in 2009.
The Pioneers look to rebound after a tough, 5-4, overtime loss to Vassar College last week. Their lone win came in the season opener when they beat Cazenovia College, 11-9. Sophomore
Ben Winkler (Rodman, NY/IHC) (Rodman, NY) led the Pioneers, scoring a team-high four points on one goal and three assists. So far this season, Winkler leads the Pioneers with seven points, including one goal against Vassar.
Hamilton College is having a perfect season thus far after posting victories against Babson, Greensboro and Drew University. Junior Jonathan Leanos (Long Valley, NJ/Delbarton School) leads the Continentals with 15 points after posting a team-high nine assists and six goals.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday as they travel to Hoboken, NJ to face Stevens Institute of Technology in the teams' conference opener. The game will be held at De Baun Field and face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
