PIONEERS DROP TIGHT DOUBLE HEADER TO SUNY OSWEGO

Utica, NY - The Utica College baseball team (0-9, 0-0 Empire 8) lost both games to SUNY Oswego (10-3, 0-0 SUNYAC) Wednesday at Laker Baseball Field. The Pioneers lost game one 3-1 and game two 2-1, in eight innings. Sophomore shortstop Chris Podlucky (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) led UC with three hits on the afternoon..

In game one, Oswego scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning at the hands of two Utica errors. UC tallied its only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning, when senior Joe Sportman (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior captain Anthony Di Salvo (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) drove him in to make to score 2-1 in favor of the Lakers. In the fifth inning, Oswego registered an insurance run on two Utica passed balls. Sophomore Nick Dunbar (Granville, NY/Granville) added two hits for Utica. Freshman pitcher Chris Jeffers (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) tossed six innings allowing no earned runs on on five hits. Jeffers recorded three strikeouts while walking four batters.

In game two, Oswego scored in the bottom of fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead off another Pioneer error. UC would answer in the top of the inning tying the game at 1-1. Sophomore Angel Zapata (Bronx, NY/Bronx Center for Science and Math) reached on an error and then advanced to third on a Elvis Gonzalez single. Freshman Terrence Reyes drove in Zapata on a sacrifice fly to center field. After two Oswego walks and a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth, the Lakers eventually converted a sacrfice fly for the victory. Sophomore pitcher Dennis Labossiere (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln) threw seven innings and allowed no earned runs on four hits. He also had three strikeouts and five walks.

The Pioneers return to action Saturday as they travel to Fredonia, NY to face SUNY Fredonia. The non-conference double header is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
