Utica, N.Y. (4/30/2011) – The Utica College men's lacrosse team closed out its 2011 campaign with a 16-6 loss to nationally-ranked No. 20 St. John Fisher College Saturday on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Senior tri-captain
Kevin Conway (Clinton, NY/Clinton) netted a team-high three goals for the Pioneers, while senior goalie
Joe Davis (Vestal, NY/Vestal) stopped 13 shots and totaled eight ground balls.
The Pioneers closed out their season with a 2-13 overall record, while the Cardinals improved their record to 11-4 overall, including a 3-4 ledger in conference play. Sophomore
Ben Winkler (Rodman, NY/IHC) chipped in with one goal and one assist for the Pioneers. Winkler finished the season with a team-high 20 goals and seven assists.
Conor Henderson led the way for the visitors with three goals and one assist, while Mike Burns and
Ryan Schmidt each netted two goals of their own. 13 different Cardinals scored at least one point in the contest and face-off man Erich Rassow went 18-of-19 on face-off opportunities and scooped up an incredible 14 ground balls.
Conway opened the scoring on the day for UC with his sixth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore
Justin Edelstein (Hartsdale, NY/Harvey School). Fisher answered with three consecutive goals before freshman
Scott Baron (Flemington, NJ/Cushing Academy) cut the Cardinal lead to 3-2 with his ninth goal of the season with 18 seconds to go in the first quarter of player.
Fisher put the game out of reach by outscoring UC 8-1 in the second quarter. The Cardinals netted seven straight goals before Winkler tallied his 20th goal of the season four minutes before the half, off an assist from freshman
Joe Schoen (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro), to cut the Pioneer deficit to 10-3. Schoen finished the day with a team-high two assists.
Fisher outscored UC 5-3 in the second half to earn the ten goal victory.
Junior defender
Mick Krajacic (Clay, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) picked up eight ground balls and caused a team-high six turnovers, while senior
Andrew DiMartino (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) caused four turnovers and picked up two ground balls. Edelstein finished the day with one goal and one assist. Senior tri-captain
Matthew Crouse (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) closed out his career at UC with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
The Pioneers were outshot 43-26 on the day and won the ground ball battle 39-26.
