Box Score Utica 6, SUNYIT 1 - Box Score

Utica, N.Y. (9/8/2011) – Junior Samantha Spohler (East Durham, NY/Cairo Durham) and sophomore Sarah Southwell (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) each registered two goals as the Utica College women's soccer team earned a convincing 6-1 victory over cross-town rival SUNYIT Thursday night. Senior Chelsea Way (Cuyler, NY/DeRuyter) tallied a career-high four points for UC, while Emily Brien (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) netted her first collegiate goal.

The Pioneers dominated play all afternoon and outshot the visitors 27-7 as they evened their record up at

1-1 on the year. Head Coach Claire McLain has never lost a contest to SUNYIT and in the last eight seasons the Pioneers have outscored their local rivals 37-5. SUNYIT, which went 15-4 overall last season, is now 0-3 to start its 2011 campaign.

SUNYIT goalie Aubrey Campbell made several saves on the doorstep to thwart the Pioneers' offensive attack early on, but it was only a matter of time before Utica was able to find the back of the net. Southwell started the Pioneers' rally in the 30th minute when she tallied her second goal of the season to put UC on top 1-0 after a perfectly placed crossing pass from freshman midfielder Chelsea McGuigan (Duanesburg, NY/Schalmont).

Just over six minutes later, Spohler finally got one of her game-high 11 shots into the back of the net after receiving a slip pass from Way. Spohler beat the SUNYIT goalie on the left side to put UC up by two goals.

Utica went on to outscore the Wildcats 4-1 in the final 40 minutes to earn the victory. Way netted her first of the year in the 50th minute, before Spohler and Southwell each added their second of the night at 62:34 and 66:01. Way and classmate Jill Benoit (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) assisted on the Pioneers' fourth and fifth goals of the game.

The Pioneers added an insurance goal with just four seconds to go in the contest when Brien lifted a shot from 20 yards out just over the outstretched arms of Wildcat reserve goalie Francesca Palladino. SUNYIT starting goalie Aubrey Campbell stopped seven shots in 69 minutes of work, while Utica senior goalie Samantha Glockling (Carleton Place, ONT/Tilton School) recorded her first collegiate victory after making two saves in net for the Pioneers.

Katie Wilday recorded the lone goal of the evening for the Wildcats.

Utica will hit the road this weekend when it travels to Oswego State for a non conference contest on Saturday. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
