Marissa Hotaling (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) recorded 24 saves for UC. The Knights netted two power play goals, just 35 seconds apart, to help seperate themselves from the Pioneers midway through the second period of play. Neumann junior net minder Shannon Donnelly played like a rock in net all night, stopping all 27 shots shots she faced as she moved her overall record to 3-8-2 on the year.
The Pioneers dropped to 6-9-2 overall and 3-6-2 in the conference while the Knights improved their overall record to 5-9-2, including a 4-7-2 mark in ECAC West play. UC is back on the ice Sunday afternoon for a 3 p.m. face off against Neumann in the second match of the weekend set at the Aud.
The first 20 minutes of action was relatively quiet, featuring just two penalties, one for each team, as Utica out shot Neumann by a margin of 9-8.
Halfway through the second period, Neumann broke the draw on a power-play, at 11:11, as Kayla Dubowski converted a 5-on-3 score to take a 1-0 advantage. Dubowski's eventual game-winner was ripped into the top left corner of the net from the point. Just 35 seconds later, the Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead on another man-up advantage when Lynsey Nakamura found the back of the net, at 11:46.
In the final period, each team was whistled for a penalty but failed to score. UC pulled its goalie with just over two minutes remaining in hopes of mounting a comeback, however, the Pioneers allowed an empty netter five seconds later at 17:45 as the Knights sealed a 3-0 win.
