Fisher Tops Utica in Empire 8 Play

Utica, N.Y. (1/7/2011) – The Utica College men's basketball team dropped a 72-60 decision against visiting St. John Fisher College in an Empire 8 Conference contest on the hardwood at the Clark Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.  The Pioneers threatened midway through the second half, cutting the visitors lead to just two points, but the Cardinals used a 15-2 run in a span of 5:17 late in the game to seal the 12 point victory. 

Utica's record fell to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the Empire 8 while SJFC snapped a two-game slide and improved its record to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the E8. UC returns to action on the road Friday night when it travels to Stevens Institute of Technology for a conference contest at 8 p.m.

Freshman point guard Aaron Nevins (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) scored a team-high 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor, while Jeff Ward (Ossining, NY/Ossining High School) added 14 points and five rebounds.  Sophomore Chris Jeffers (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) ripped down a game-high 14 rebounds for UC and chipped in with eight points.  Senior Reggie German (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) added ten points and junior Matt Baldwin (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) scored 11. 

Jordan Gettings led all scorers with 22 points and dished out four assists for the Cardinals, while David Lynch came off the bench and dropped 14 points on 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc. 

Fisher led by seven points, 18-11, midway through the first half before the Pioneers went on an 8-0 run to take a 19-18 lead after Jeffers converted on a layup.  The Cardinals answered with a 15-7 run to earn a seven point lead at the half, 33-26. 

Fisher extended their lead to as many as 12 with 13:22 to go before the Pioneers when on a 10-0 run in a span of 3:16 to cut the Cardinal lead to two points, 48-46, with 9:06 to go.  That's when Fisher went on a 15-2 run in the next 5:17 to seal the key conference victory.
