Box Score Utica N.Y (10/06/12) - The Utica College field hockey team lost, 4-3, to Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon on a penalty shot late in the second half.
UC falls to 7-4 overall and 1-3 in the Empire 8 while the Presidents improve to 7-4 on the season and 3-2 in conference action.
Washington & Jefferson's Arielle King scored the first goal of the game at 11:32 when she collected a rebound and beat the goalie to her right for the score.
Sophomore
Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) struck first blood for the Pioneers with 29:42 on the clock, scoring off a penalty
corner just inside the circle to tie the game, 1-1, heading into halftime.
In the second half, W & J regianed a one goal advantage as Jennifer Marabella found the back of the net at 44:44 off an assist by Arielle King to take a 2-1 edge.
UC's
Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) retaliated with a game-tying goal, just less than ten minutes later, at 53:12 to knot the contest up 2-2. Mackey was credited with the assist on the play.
Sophomore Pioneers
Angela Charles (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and
Alaina Stojkovski (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) hooked up to give Utica its first lead of the afternoon, 3-2, at 56:26.
However, two late goals by President's Jennifer Marabella and Erin Barno would seal the victory for W & J as they extend its win streak to three.
UC goalie
Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) stopped five shots while allowing four and is now 2-1 over her first three starts in net.
The Pioneers return to their home turf Wednesday as they welcome the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College to Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The non-conference contest is set for 4 p.m.
