Clinton, NY (11/25/2012) – The Utica College men's basketball team lost to Union College 86-69 in the consolation contest of the Hamilton College Thanksgiving Tournament Sunday afternoon at Scott Field House. Utica (1-3) had four different players score in double-figures as the Pioneers lost their second contest of the weekend.
Aaron Nevins (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) and Connor Maisch each led UC with 14 point efforts, while senior forward
Jeff Ward (Ossining, NY/Ossining High School) added 11 points and five rebounds. Senior
Matt Baldwin (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) chipped in with 10 points, including three 3-pointers, and junior forward
Chris Jeffers (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) grabbed a team-high ten rebounds and scored eight points.
The Pioneers trailed by one point, 9-8, less than four minutes into the contest before the Dutchmen used a 9-0 run in a span of three minutes to take a ten point advantage, 18-8, with 13:04 left in the first half of play. With Utica trailing by five points, 22-17, midway through the first half, Union used an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 13 points, 8:52 before the half.
Union (2-1) led from the opening bucket and managed a 13 point lead at the half, while shooting 50.7% from the floor over the course of the contest.
Utica cut its deficit to eight points on multiple occasions in the opening minutes of the second half until the Dutchmen used a 10-2 run to extend their lead to 18 points, 73-55, with 7:14 to go. Union was able to fend off any chances of a Pioneer comeback down the stretch as the Dutchmen earned a 17-point victory.
Dutchmen Joe Mason scored a game-high 25 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the floor, while Keven Donohue netted 13 points and snagged a game-best 11 rebounds. Evan Croll shot 5-of-6 from the floor and scored 12 points, while Cal Shorey added eight points and five assists.
The Pioneers return to the hardwood on Wednesday night when they travel to SUNY Canton for a non-conference contest at 6 p.m.
