Comeback Falls Short as Union Downs UC in Women's Hoops

Fiore had a team-high 18 points and 11 rebounds
Box Score Schenectady, NY (12/11/12)- The Utica College basketball team was narrowly edged by host Union College, 47-44, Tuesday night at the Viniar athletic center.  Senior Meghan Fiore (Epping, NH/Epping) led the Pioneers with 18 points and a game-high 11 boards for her second consecutive double-double, while freshman Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds of her own.

The teams traded the lead most of the game, however the Dutchwomen were able to finally gain control with 11:04 remaining in the game.  UC held on and was able to come within one point by way of a Brittany Baudanza (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) layup with just five seconds remaining.  However Union was able to hold off the rally and net an insurance layup with just one second left to win its sixth game of the year

Miceli led UC with three 3-pointers on the night, while sophomore Marissa Kahane (Sayville, NY/Sayville) also added a bucket from behind the arc.  Junior Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) brought down eight rebounds to improve her total to 98 on the season. Junior Alyssa Filkins (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) also had a game-high seven assists and six steals.

The Pioneers (4-5) return to action after nearly a three week break as they travel to Madison, NJ on Saturday, Dec. 29 to take on Drew University.  Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
