Women's Hockey Hosts Buff State for Final Home Games

UTICA, NY (2-15-12)- The Utica College women's ice hockey team is set for its final home games of the season at it takes on Buffalo State, Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.  Both games will take place at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Honoring the Seniors: Friday night, UC will honor its two seniors, defenseman MacKenzie Roy (Concord, NH/Cushing Academy) and Director of Hockey Operations Jeanette McCorry… Roy holds the UC record for scoring amongst defensemen with 58 career points… She is also the active leader with 101 games played… McCorry was been a huge part of the team since joining the team her freshman year… She helps with all day-to-day operations and maintains player equipment.

Last Time Out: UC is coming off two home losses to nationally ranked No. 6 Plattsburgh State…  Despite being outshot, the Cardinals downed UC 7-1 on Saturday… Sophomore Meredith Tice (Hershey, PA/Washington Pride) netted the lone Pioneer goal on assists from classmates Vanessa Maines (Boxborough, MA/Boston Jr. Shamrocks) and Brittany DelleChiaie (Leominster, MA/The Winchendon School)… On Sunday, the Pioneers fell 3-1… Junior Meghan Willett (Worcester, MA/Cushing Academy) scored the only goal for UC.

Playoff Picture: The Pioneers are currently in seventh place in the ECAC West Conference, sitting just two points behind Neumann University… The Pioneers will need to sweep Buffalo State and have Chatham take at least three points against Neumann in order to advance to the conference tournament. 

Leading the Way: Sophomore Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) leads the team in goals (13), assists (19), and points (32)… She is currently tied for seventh in the nation in assists and eighth in points… Myers has seven goals and seven assists in her last ten games and is averaging 1.39 points per game.

Super Sophomores: The sophomore class has accounted for 26 of the Pioneers 53 goals this season… Five different members of the class have scored at least one goal…  DelleChiaie is third on the team with five goals scored… She also has four assists…  Classmates Meredith Tice (Hershey, PA/Washington Pride), Vanessa Maines (Boxborough, MA/Boston Jr. Shamrocks), and Kristen Beckman (Arnold, MD/Northwood School) have also netted goals… Tice has four goals, while Maines has netted three goals, and Beckman has contributed one tally.

Helping Out: Junior Meghan McMahon (Gardner, MA/St. Marks (MA)) ranks second on the team in assists (11) and points (15)… Carmen Johnson (Falls Church, VA/Washington Pride) and Nicole Schwartz (Danville, CA/San Jose Sharks) each have 11 points and Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) is fifth on the team with ten points.

Between the Pipes: Sophomore Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) has been strong in net for the Pioneers… She has registered a .930 save percentage and a 2.22 goals-against average to go along with three shutouts… She is currently in the top 15 in the nation in save percentage and is tied for seventh in shutouts. 

Scouting Buff State: The Bengals are currently 7-14-2 overall and 4-11-1 in the conference… They are coming off a split with Cortland… Buff State is led by seniors Christine Williams and Brianna Murphy… Williams has 20 points on 13 goals and seven assists, while Murphy has netted four goals and 11 assists for 15 points… UC defeated the Bengals 3-1 and 2-1 last season.
